The morning turned brighter when Adrian showed up. I was so sure I'd been too late that I was plotting my Denton route when Adrian showed up. So, we put my backpack over by a building away from the school and did some intervals. We did 1 lap hard, then rest a lap, 2 laps hard, rest a lap and so on. It was nice to do something different and I think I'll work intervals in about 2x a week.

I tried.

Frazz is the only cyclist in the comics that I know of right now. (Fill me in if I'm missing one.) But this one on good long rides is way true.

For what it's worth ...

If your bike starts squirmin' on you, don't look down. Trust your tires, fix your eyes on where you want to go, and ride like hell for that point. I didn't take my own advice the other night and spilled. Of course, I also forgot to roll, but instead landed fully on a locked left arm, nearly driving my shoulder out my back. Fortunately, it wasn't caught on anyone's digital, but I thought I'd go ahead and tell anyway just in case the reminder might keep someone else from doing the same dumb trick.

Went on the husker teams recovery ride tonight. Was fun. Couldn't resist taking the rb1 down the roca rd for the sake of comparison with yesterday's fixed ride. Didn't seem any easier with gears. Weird.

Morning rides

So, I've been riding out to the turn-off onto Hwy 43 North from Hwy 2 in the mornings. The mileage, according to gmap-pedometer, is 31.6 miles. That's measuring from the intersection of my street and 'A' ST round-trip. Takes mesomewhere between about an hour and half to an hour and 45 depending on the wind.

It's great watching the sunrise and seeing the mist/haze settled over the hills. So long as I get out early, like by 5:30 am, the traffic isn't too onerous. Every once in a while, I see the signs of 'roadie.' You know, banana peels.

Playin' in the dirt

So, Tuesday nights are the Monkey Wrench rides and I went for the first time yesterday thanks to Nate who loaned me his Surly Karate Monkey. It was lots of fun. I got so much dust in my mouth 'cause I couldn't stop grinnin'. Next time I go, I'm wearing my helmet, gloves, and regular riding clothes, instead of what I wore to work. Not only will I feel more comfortable riding more aggressively, but I won't ruin my clothes. :) (not that I'm *completely* opposed to trying out new laundry techniques, but ... well you know I'd rather be riding.)

Waterford frame is in!

Haven't waited for something with this much anticipation since I don't know when. Here's some initial pics. It's gonna have a Rohloff hub, which is the reason for the funky dropouts. The color will probably be too contrasty on a windows machine, but oh well.

Trusty steed. I love this bike and sure appreciate Nate's and Eric's efforts in not only selling it to me, but helping me dial it in. (Big thanks to Conrad too, for pedals and leading the charge in finally ridding it of a particularily annoying creak.) After all the BRAN miles, there's a few more alterations I want to make, but by and large, it's a fun ride and sure scoots down the road. In fact, I would say that I have to thank this bike for helping me discover just how much I love to watch the miles disappear under its tires.

Me and Sue

As I said before, Sue from Oregon was one of the characters I met on the trip. She's been so many places and does whatever she pleases. She rides a Bike Friday when doing self-supported touring and an Independent Fabrication for rides like BRAN. In this pic, she and I were gawking at a yard with an amazing assortment of metal art/figures, etc. displayed on rocks. No grass to mow or anything.

The short day after the century was almost weird. The pack of people never did really thin out and it took half the ride to get warmed up and start trucking. There was the greatest hill at the end though. I guess in Nebraska, if they think the hill needs a sign, you can count on it to be a fun one. Funny thing was that C and I were dinking along getting drinks when we heard "on your left," but then we put down the bottles and returned to pace. Never did see anyone come up beside us. Later that evening, a guy from Omaha complimented me on the pace. :)

The trip to Eustis was perfect. Perfect weather, barely any wind, beautiful scenery and good company. Breakfast was had in Calloway. Had an excellent breakfast burrito and sat across from a guy who spent a good 10 minutes telling me about all his bikes and how fast he and his club mates rode on their practices. Well .... later in the week, this fellow didn't do the century day, and opted out of an entire ride day. Guess he needs to actually ride more and drink less beer. ;)

Me and Crazy Kelly

This is "Crazy Kelly." And, to give you a sense of how he is, I heard one person describe him as a "two-year-old on crack." But really, he goes a long way towards making the trip. Always upbeat, charming, and utterly wild, he cheers folks up when they're suffering the wind by hollering stuff out the window of the van, and fixes bikes with speed. He also starts each day with a new hat. The one he's wearing in this pic is a pair of recycled men's underwear with a brim. After the century day, he would holler out "There's the fastest girl on BRAN" every time he saw me. Didn't matter if we were on the road, in a potluck dining hall, or a crowded SAG stop.

OK, I figured it out .... pictures that is

All posts are being made with my phone and tonight is the first chance I've had to get connected. So .... if you want to see the pics a little easier and read the posts, just go to my flikr spot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sydney_b/

Today's highlights included seeing a two-headed calf. Nearby was something almost as weird, or maybe weirder, but it was a dwarf calf. Both were stuffed and permanent residents of the Cambridge museum.

In last night's rain storm I ruined my cell charger, but found a $10 solution here. It's a little unit you put batteries in and it charges your phone. Not fast, but at least I'm not dead anymore.

Huge rain storm, many swamped and flattened tents, but mine held. Had dinner with sue, from oregon, and is the coolest person i've met so far. She has been all over the world on her bike friday.

Rolling thunder now. Sitting in tent organizing, then will do bike chores (clean, lube, and patch blown tube) , eat, and crash.

Day 1 sunday was a perfect day. Sunny but cool winds in our favor. Very fast 60 odd miles. Did a lot of passing.
